However, the process of <span class=\"highlight\">teaching<\/span> students engaged in inquiry provides practice in the application of important <span class=\"highlight\">research<\/span> <span class=\"highlight\">skills<\/span>. Using a performance rubric, we compared the quality of <span class=\"highlight\">methodological<\/span> <span class=\"highlight\">skills<\/span> demonstrated in written <span class=\"highlight\">research<\/span> proposals for two groups of early career <span class=\"highlight\">graduate<\/span> students (those with both <span class=\"highlight\">teaching<\/span> and <span class=\"highlight\">research<\/span> responsibilities and those with only <span class=\"highlight\">research<\/span>  responsibilities) at the beginning and end of an academic year. After  statistically controlling for preexisting differences between groups,  students who both taught and conducted <span class=\"highlight\">research<\/span>  demonstrate significantly greater improvement in their abilities to  generate testable hypotheses and design valid experiments.
